Education in the UK

Foundation Year

Aside from the English language requirements for international students, many universities in the United Kingdom require either A Levels or an IB diploma from the applicants. Foundation year is mandatory for international students who are not qualified for applying to an undergraduate program, either in terms of their academic background or English language.

Although the foundation programs also have several entry requirements, including a minimum of 5.5 IELTS score, many of the universities in the United Kingdom now offer foundation programs and give the students a chance to proceed to their undergraduate courses by offering a wide range of courses from mathematics to languages.

Undergraduate Degree

If a student is qualified to apply for an undergraduate degree in the United Kingdom, they must complete their application through The Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS), which allows students to apply to a maximum of five courses. While the duration of undergraduate programs in the United Kingdom is generally three years, the program can be as long as 6 years for some degrees.

Students can send their applications via UCAS starting from the beginning of September during their senior year of high school. The deadline for applying to an undergraduate program at Oxford and Cambridge Universities, and for some certain programs in other universities, is October 15th. For other prestigious universities, students must complete their applications by January 15th, however, if the student is applying from outside the European Union the deadline is June 30th.

Graduate Degree

Graduate courses in the United Kingdom are generally either theoretical or research programs. Theoretical programs usually are year-long programs, which include seminars, coursework, assessments, and dissertation studies. Whereas research-based programs usually last for two or three years, and include intense and specific research throughout the program.

The main entry requirements for a graduate program in the United Kingdom are English language and a good academic background. It is important to note that some universities offer pre-sessional courses for applicants with inadequate language requirements and pre-master programs for students who need to develop themselves in terms of both their English level and academics.
